The Nigerian Government Has Stressed That Many Of The Cyber criminal Schemes That Operate In The Country Are Not Run By Nigerians.
Making cybersecurity jobs more accessible and desirable than cybercrime is the trick for Nations like Nigeria. To improve cybersecurity education and fraud awareness, the Government has already contacted groups like the Nigeria Internet Registration Association ( NIRA ) and the Student Union Executives. Furthermore, within the past year, law enforcement agencies have increased their investigations and enforcement activities.
In an endeavor known as operation Jackal lll, Interpol collaborated with law enforcement in 21 Nations in July 2024 to apprehend West African Cyber criminals engaged in financial fraud. Similar collaboration resulted in the arrest of over 1,000 defendants in December 2024 who were connected to over $192 Million in financial losses throughout Africa.
Many of the cybercrime schemes that exist in Nigeria are not operated by Nigerians, the Government of Nigeria has emphasized. According to a December 2024 statement, nearly a quarter of those arrested were not Nigerian citizens. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede Stated at a Press conference that " foreigners are taking advantage of our Nations unfortunate reputation as a haven for frauds to establish a foothold here to disguise their atrocious criminal enterprises." " But, as this operation has shown, there will be no hiding places for criminals in Nigeria."
