Cyber Surge In Africa
Globally, cybercrime has increased dramatically in recent years, with the number of successful hacks more than doubling over the previous five years. In Africa, this worrying tendency is apparent.
AFRICA'S CYBERCRIME EXPERIENCE
For each company, the continent had the most weekly Cyber attacks in 2023. Businesses and Government may suffer greatly as a result of these occurrences, which can include anything from major financial theft and the disclosure of private information to interruptions in corporate operations.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa estimates that African Nations may lose up to 10% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) a year, as a result of their inability to prepare for Cyber attacks. In Africa, 91% of successful attacks on individuals and 52% successful attacks on organizations involve in social engineering.
In over 29% of these attacks, fraudulent websites imitate the authentication pages of banks, companies, or payment systems. The inadequate infrastructure for cybersecurity is one of the continent's biggest problems. Due to a lack of cybersecurity procedures, nearly 90% of African firms are very susceptible to assaults.
Experts are urging a rethink of Africa's cybersecurity strategy in light of this dire circumstance as the continent transitions to digital technology.
