Interpol: Is It Possible To Remove The Term " Pig Butchering?"

In it's broader " Think Twice " campaign, interpol claims that victims of online scams are being discouraged from coming forward because they fear being linked to terms like " Pig Butchering," which is used to describe Long-con romance fraud schemes. Romance - Baiting cybercrimes begin with a fictitious relationship in which the target " Pig" is " fattened Up" before being conned into sending money, then "Butchered" and then ghosted once they have turned over the "whole hog" of their assets.

Once victims realize they have been conned, they are left heartbroken and embarrassed, and further labeling them as Pig Butchering, which are operated by extensive global Cybercrime organizations, cost victims Billions of Dollars annually. It was found that one major Pig Butchering company was making over $60 Billion over the previous three years by operating full- fledged call centers using forced laborers in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has also employed the Pig Butchering strategy.

" Academic research clearly shows the links between the tactics of fraudsters and of perpetrators of domestic abuse and coercive control," according to a statement from interpol issued by Dr. Elisabeth Carter, academic linguist and associate professor of Criminology at Kingston University London. " It is imperative that we do not adopt the terminology of these criminals but instead use terms that assist public protection and support victim reporting."
