Google has unveiled new AI-driven scam detection features for Android devices, aimed at safeguarding users from fraudulent schemes and protecting personal information.

Real-Time Scam Warnings for Calls and Messages

• Targeting Conversational Scams – The AI models focus on detecting scams that begin as seemingly harmless conversations before turning malicious.
• Spoofed Caller ID Protection – Scammers frequently disguise their numbers to appear as trusted companies, a tactic this new system aims to counter.

On-Device AI for Privacy-Preserving Alerts

• The scam detection runs entirely on-device, ensuring user privacy while analyzing conversations for suspicious patterns.
• If a potential scam is detected, users receive real-time alerts and can choose to dismiss, report, or block the sender.
• The feature is enabled by default but only applies to unknown numbers not in the contact list.

Availability & Expansion Plans

• Initially launching in English for users in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, with plans for a broader rollout in the future.
• A similar AI-powered scam detection for phone calls is being expanded to all English-speaking Pixel 9+ users in the U.S.
• This feature, first introduced in November 2024, is off by default, allowing users to enable it as needed.
• If turned on, Scam Detection beeps during the call to inform both parties that it is active.

The announcement follows Google's recent security push, revealing that over 1 billion Chrome users are now using Enhanced Protection mode in Safe Browsing.
