Google has introduced a new feature called Identity Check for supported Android devices, which enhances security by requiring biometric authentication to access sensitive settings when users are outside trusted locations.

"When enabled, Identity Check requires explicit biometric authentication to access certain sensitive resources outside of trusted areas," Google explained in its announcement.

The feature adds a layer of security for actions such as:

  • Accessing saved passwords and passkeys via Google Password Manager
  • Auto-filling passwords in apps through Google Password Manager (excluding Chrome)
  • Changing screen locks or biometric settings
  • Performing a factory reset
  • Disabling Find My Device or theft protection features
